Korean Diakonia
A United and Mature Korean Church
The oil spill off the west coast in December 2007 was a catastrophe that seemed beyond hope. However, 1.2 million volunteers joined forces to overcome this great disaster. Among them, 800,000 Korean church members gathered with the heart of Christ, and through their service and devotion, what was predicted to take 30 years to recover was accomplished in just 7 months — creating a miracle that made the impossible possible.
Building upon the Korean Christian Social Welfare Association (KCSWA), a registered corporation founded in 2002, Korean Diakonia was established in 2009 through the merger of KCSWA and Korean Diakonia. In 2010, it united with Korean Church Hope Coalition, and in 2012, World Diakonia was established for global disaster relief and development, expanding its reach beyond Korea to the entire world.
Korean Diakonia consists of two incorporated bodies, two headquarters, and one forum:
1. "KCSWA" — domestic disaster relief and volunteer activities.
2. "World Diakonia" — overseas disaster relief and development.
3. "Volunteer Headquarters" — coordinating church volunteers with government, civil society, and religious sectors.
4. "Inter-Korean Cooperation Headquarters" — ministry to North Korean residents in partnership with government and international organizations.
5. "Diakonia Forum" — professors and field experts specializing in social welfare and diakonia theology.
Korean Diakonia stands ready to serve first as a friend, comforter, and partner at every disaster and relief site.
Through Prayer, Service, and Devotion
Empowered by the prayers, service, and devotion of Korean churches and their members:
1. Flood relief in Myanmar, the Philippines, and Libya
2. Earthquake relief in China, Indonesia, Haiti, Türkiye, and Morocco
3. Nutritional support for infants and toddlers in North Korea
4. Relief for victims of the Ukraine-Russia war
With the mission of "We will go wherever needed," we carry out diverse relief activities wherever disaster and aid are required.
Korean Diakonia has also provided comfort and psychological stabilization therapy programs for victims of the Pohang earthquake, Gangneung-Sokcho wildfires, flood-affected areas, and families affected by the Sewol ferry, Yongsan, and Itaewon disasters.
By hosting the Christian Social Welfare Expo three times — in 2005, 2010, and 2016 — we have advocated the importance and necessity of the church's social service ministry to Korean churches and their members.
In the mid-to-long term, through supporting the establishment of Korean-model health centers in Ukraine and providing medical support for leprosy patients and rare disease patients worldwide, we aim to unite the service ministries that individual churches and denominations have carried out separately under the name of the Korean Church, striving to make the Korean Church stand tall as a beacon of hope for Korean society.
Korean Diakonia will always be with those in need at disaster relief sites, leading the way with the heart that the Lord's touch may reach the places that need help most — "Disaster Relief 119, Korean Diakonia." We ask for your prayers and support.
